The Glass Fire in Napa and Sonoma counties has more than tripled since Monday morning, when it was reported to be at 11,000 acres. The Glass Fire has since increased to over 36,000 acres. The Zogg Fire in Shasta County has grown to over 31,000 acres, more than four times the 7,000 acres it was reported to have burned as of Sunday. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Monday across Napa, Sonoma and Shasta counties due to the Glass and Zogg fires....

Evacuations near the fires, which are raging south of Los Angeles, led to around 80,000 people leaving their homes, but thousands have recently been told they can return. Silverado Fire As of yesterday, the Silverado Fire, near Irvine, was 5 per cent contained and no homes had been lost. The Irvine Police Department had issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents, but some people are now allowed to return their home....

The website also contains a link for supporters to report any alleged election fraud. “We trust in our officials to safeguard that ballot box… however, when those officials, either through laziness or incompetence, allow thieves to steal amidst the dead of night and cheat our ballot box, we can no longer rely on its contents,” the petition reads....

A nine-member Reparations Task Force was deployed to travel across the state and develop reparation recommendations and propose solutions to its findings, which take into account the harms that Black people suffered. In a March 2022 report, the task force said that those eligible for reparations should be descendants of enslaved African Americans or of a “free Black person living in the United States prior to the end of the 19th century....

Several California assembly members—10 Democrats and 1 independent—are widely expected to announce proposals for a $400 gas rebate today (Thursday, March 17). The funds for the $9 billion proposal would come out of the state’s multibillion dollar budget surplus, in a bid by politicians to help offset the amount of gas tax California drivers are paying. If the proposal is passed, officials say every Californian in the state who files taxes would receive $400, including those who do not drive, in order to help offset the rise in living expenses too....

According to the short-range forecast by the National Weather Service (NWS), a weather system that is currently over the Pacific Ocean will move southward throughout today. As the cold front approaches the west coast, heavier rain—with the potential for thunder and lightning—is forecast. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) lists a “slight risk” for excessive rainfall tomorrow. Further north, a frost advisory is in effect until 10:00 a.m. PT for Curry County coast in South Oregon, affecting cities like Coos Bay, Reedsport, Bandon and Coquille....

Fires in the state have burned more than 2.9 million acres this year, already surpassing the previous highest total of 1.9 million acres, which came in 2018. “This is crazy,” California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Captain Richard Cordova told CNN. “We haven’t even got into the October and November fire season, and we’ve broken the all-time record. According to a quarterly report published by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), two of California’s existing wolf packs—the Lassen pack and the Whaleback pack—have welcomed a flurry of pups into their families this year. The Lassen pack welcomed five pups, while the Whaleback pack had at least six, the report said. Wolves in California are scarce. Paula Beth James, 68, was rescued on Wednesday after her Toyota 4Runner was found buried in the snow in Butte Meadows, located around 40 minutes outside Chico, California, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. James was reported missing after she was last seen on January 9 at her home in Oroville, California, and a Silver Alert was issued in a bid to locate James over the weekend....

On Friday, 35 GOP Senators blocked a bill that was passed in the Democratic-led House that sought to form a bipartisan commission to investigate the events of Capitol riot. The House-approved bill was modeled after a 9/11 style commission, and sought to establish a 10-person committee, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, tasked with investigating the facts and circumstances of the assault. Five people died as a result of the Capitol riot, when a mob of pro–Donald Trump supporters sought to disrupt the congressional certification of Joe Biden’s electoral victory....
