Nuclear arms analysts combing through satellite images of the desert plains in northwestern China have now found what they believe are 230 silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch sites in Yumen, Gansu, and Hami, Xinjiang, respectively. The Chinese government has not signed on to arms control treaties like New START, despite the wishes of co-signatories the U.S. and Russia. Beijing says it plans to keep its nuclear arsenal at a “minimum level,” but the buildup of its silos deep inland—beyond the reach of most conventional weapons—has experts questioning China’s stated commitments....

Lieber, the 62-year-old ex-chair of Harvard’s department of chemistry and chemical biology, was accused of hiding his involvement in China’s Thousand Talents Plan, which recruits people from foreign countries who are able to share secrets about their country’s technologies and intellectual properties. Prosecutors said Lieber organized conferences, published articles, and applied for patents on the behalf of Wuhan University of Technology. In return, the university paid him $50,000 a month....

In just three weeks, the death toll from the pneumonia-causing coronavirus has risen from three deaths to 910. On Sunday, China’s National Health Commission reported an additional 97 deaths, representing a 12 percent increase from the previous daily briefing and the most deaths in a single day. Of those 97 people, the vast majority—91 people—were from the Hubei province, where Wuhan, the origin city for the virus, is located. Two were in the neighboring province of Anhui and one each was reported in Jiangxi province, Hainan province and Gansu province....

The short bulletin, released via the embassy’s official account on messaging and social media app WeChat on Monday, predicted a further escalation of fighting, saying the “worsening tensions” looked to be “rising sharply.” The majority of its citizens in Ukraine had already left the country, the security notice said. It urged remaining Chinese nationals to leave “as soon as possible.” The government placed the number of Chinese citizens in Ukraine at around 6,000, the first of whom were evacuated west in buses on February 28, a full four days after the hostilities began....

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian said Thursday that activity by U.S. military ships and surveillance planes directed at China has increased significantly under Biden’s administration, as the U.S. military presence in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait is promoting “regional militarization and threatening regional peace and stability.” While Biden did not discuss any military threats in his address Wednesday, he did emphasize that China and others were “closing in fast” in economic and technological terms....

The cases were found during initial screenings conducted throughout the Chinese city. A total of 97 cases were recorded, with others anticipated being found in the coming days. Around 12 million tests have already been distributed and 7.8 million of those were returned with samples. All citizens have been ordered to shelter in place as the investigation continues.
