San Diego County’s board of supervisors listened to local residents express support and concern for the new policy during a Tuesday board meeting before approving it in a 3-2 vote. Nathan Fletcher, who chairs the county’s board of supervisors, released a statement Wednesday after the vote identifying San Diego as the first county in the U.S. to approve such a declaration. “Combatting health misinformation needs to start on the ground, in counties and cities across our nation,” Fletcher’s statement said....

A Thursday report from California State Auditor Elaine Howle said that the Employment Development Department (EDD) was severely underprepared to combat fraud and did nothing to stop paying fake claims for months. So far, the state has paid at least $10.4 billion to fraudsters, with an additional $20 billion under review. The EDD has been under intense fire in recent weeks after investigations have shown the agency’s poor management and lack of protections cost state taxpayers billions....

Cesar Palma and his daughter Selena were travelling on a Metro train to the Westlake area of Los Angeles when they were allegedly first approached by a man named by police as Elijah John Lopez who was sitting nearby. Police say Lopez asked if he could take the girl home and several other train passengers intervened and told Lopez to leave the two alone, say police. When they got off the train at the 7th Street Metro station downtown, detectives say Lopez began hassling them again prompting bystanders to defend the pair....

The man, whom the paper identified as Chad Little, helped his family prepare to evacuate as the LNU Lightning Complex Fire sped toward their home last week. When it came time to leave, Little, who told the paper he lost a previous family home five years ago, chose to stay and battle the blaze himself. Little said he felt confident in his firefighting efforts until the water in his area shut off, according to The Reporter....
