“I had a long and busy time last year. I became a dad in January, so I’ve been enjoying that side of my life,” Smith told Sporting News. “It’s been good and enjoyable. A little tiring, but good.”

That being said, the new dad is eager to get back into the ring and is eyeing a spring date to do so.

“I feel now it’s time to switch back onto boxing and hopefully get a fight in May or June — that’s what I’ve been told and this week or next we’ll get confirmation and hopefully make an announcement,” Smith said. “I know a rough date to aim toward, so I’m just in the gym ticking over and ready to step up and put the pedal to the floor as Joe [Gallagher] would say, but I’m excited. I had the one goal to become world champion for so long and now that I’ve achieved it, I thought that it was the top of the mountain. But now that I’m up there, it’s not. There are a lot of other things I’m capable of achieving, so I’m looking at the next chapter of my career which I’m excited about.”

Callum’s older brother Liam is in action this Saturday against Sam Eggington, live and exclusively on DAZN. “Mundo” believes his brother will come through with a great performance regardless of what a game contender Eggington is Saturday.

“Sam is a tough fighter and every time he’s been the underdog he always seems to put on his best performance and when he has a tick over fight he seems to slip up," Smith said. “So, we’re expecting the best version of him to show up Saturday and if that’s the case, then it should be an entertaining fight. But I feel regardless of what version of Sam turns up, if Liam Smith performs, then he should be too good for him. I think stylistically it’s a fan-friendly fight, but also a fight that can make Liam look good and compliment his style pretty well and we are hoping for a Liam Smith win, but a good performance is what we’re after.”
