According to Southern Living magazine, there are more than 40 types of poodle mixes to choose from and the most popular breeds are the goldendoodle, a golden retriever and poodle mix, a Yorkiepoo, Yorkshire terrier cross, and a Bernedoodle, a cross between a poodle and a Bernese mountain dog.
Poodle crosses have become one of the most popular and sought after breeds in recent years, but why, and why do they continue to be?
Website Breedingbusiness.com suggests that one of the main reasons the crossbreeds are so popular is because of the lower chances of disease. “A crossbreed is often much less prone to diseases than pure breeds,” it reports. “This is argued to be because of less inbreeding and more genetic variation within the puppies. Therefore, less recessive diseases that exist within these breeds will be able to affect the litters produced. Furthermore, it has also been found that crossbreeds have a generally longer lifespan.”
The site also suggests that the combination of both beauty and brains is another big pull. Many adore the luscious locks and endearing faces of the poodle crosses, fulfilling many peoples desire for a classically ‘cute’ dog. However, it also reports that “they have one of the highest IQ levels out of all dog breeds, similar to the very intelligent parent the Poodle. They also love to be trained and make their owner happy. This leads to an easy-to-train companion.”
