Both Rivers and the Chargers have said all along they wanted to work out a long-term deal to keep the veteran in San Diego. They found common ground Saturday night, agreeing to a four-year contract extension through the 2019 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Rivers will get $83.250 million and $65 million guaranteed.

Rivers, who has spent his entire career with the Chargers since he was selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft, was entering the final season of a six-year, $92 million contract. Prior to the 2015 draft, former San Diego player LaDainian Tomlinson said Rivers had lost confidence in the organization.

Rivers’ short-term future with the team seemed certain after the team did not try to move up for former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota and, instead, used their first-round pick on Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon.

In 11 seasons with the Chargers, Rivers has thrown for 36,655 yards with 252 touchdowns and 122 interceptions.
