The Tour halted proceedings on March 12 after the opening round of The Players’ Championship. A combined 11 tournaments have been canceled—six of them were scheduled to be played between March and May—with PGA executives having to reshuffle the calendar following a 10-week suspension.

Koepka began the year as the top-ranked player in the world but lost the crown to McIlroy in February. He had struggled to find form after spending three months away from the course following knee surgery. The Floridian has not finished in the top 15 in his last five starts but has used the coronavirus-enforced outbreak to return to full fitness.

“I dug myself a hole, obviously, getting injured. But you play good, you win, everything will take care of itself,” he told reporters on Wednesday ahead of the first round at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

The four-time major winner has slid to No. 3 in the world rankings, but is looking to wrestle the mantle of highest-ranked player in the world away from McIlroy.

“I’ve got eyes on Rory,” he added. “That’s the goal, to get back to No 1 in the world. That’s the whole point of playing is to be the best.

“If I do what I’m supposed to do, if I take care of my business, then I don’t see any reason why I couldn’t get back to that.”

While Koepka has finished second at Colonial in 2018 when he shot 63 in the second and fourth round, McIlroy makes his debut on the course on Thursday. The Northern Irishman has two wins in his PGA Tour career when making a tournament debut—the 2010 Wells Fargo Championship and the 2019 RBC Canadian Open—and has finished outside the top 10 just once in his last 10 starts since missing the cut at The Open Championship last July.

Like Koepka, Rahm has also finished runner-up at Colonial in recent years—he was tied for second in 2017—and has five top-10 finishes in his last six starts on the tour.

McIlroy, Koepka and Rahm will tee off from tee No. 1 at 2:06 p.m. EDT. They will be preceded on the course by Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth. Thomas is one of only two players to have won twice on the PGA Tour this season, while Fowler has three top-20 finishes at Colonial since 2012.

Spieth, meanwhile, will be hoping the three-month hiatus snapped a severe slump in form. The former world No. 1 struggled badly at the beginning of the season, finishing in the top 50 just once in five starts and admitted the COVID-19 outbreak-enforced lockdown came at an opportune moment.

“I was certainly grateful for the time,” he was quoted as saying by Golf Channel.

“Certainly it’s not a positive situation in general, but for me personally, I tried to look at how I can make this an advantage to myself.”

Elsewhere, Dustin Johnson will play the first two rounds along with Justin Rose and Bryson DeChambeau, while last year’s winner Kevin Na will tee off alongside Gary Woodland and Phil Mickelson.
