Stuck at home with their graduation ceremony canceled, Berkeley students decided to recreate their entire campus in stunning detail using “Minecraft.” The project has taken more than a month and required almost 24/7 work from multiple volunteers. In an update at 8:47 p.m. ET on Monday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) confirmed that the Caldor Fire had so far destroyed 186,568 acres while being 15 percent contained as it continued to spread close to Lake Tahoe, which straddles the border between California and Nevada. In reaction to the continued spread of the fire, which was sparked in California on August 14, an evacuation order was issued for the areas surrounding South Lake Tahoe, a tourist city with a population of more than 20,000 people....

The California Assembly on Monday overwhelmingly passed a bill prohibiting use of the name at high schools beginning in 2017. The bill’s sponsor, Assemblyman Luis Alejo of Watsonville, hailed its passage by a 57-9 vote. Senate Bill 206, or The Fair Pay to Play Act, has been in the works for nearly a year but will not be enforced until Jan. 1, 2023. More than 17,000 firefighters are battling 24 major wildfires across the state, including the Glass and Zogg fires, each of which has burned over 55,000 acres, as of Thursday. A Red Flag Warning is in effect through much of Friday for the North and South Bay areas, Central Mendocino County, Western Monterey County and most of the Los Padres National Forest due to gusty winds and low humidity. “High temperatures also persist, adding to the critical fire weather danger....

Among the active fires––Kincade Fire, Maria Fire and Sobrante Fire––remain threats; while Burris Fire, 46 Fire and Saddle Ridge Fire are at least 90 percent contained. The powerful winds fueling the blazes subsided towards the end of last week, which helped responders gain control over most of the outbreaks. Authorities have traced the fires to different causes––including heat from a car’s wheels after a police chase––but California’s seasonal dry spells make it susceptible to wildfires every year, according to the National Weather Service (NWS)....

Two other bridge employees were treated at the scene before being released. Aerial footage shot by NBC Bay Area showed a sports utility vehicle and a sweeper truck colliding next to the barricade. These vehicles then slammed into a truck being used as a barricade, which was then propelled into the officers and bridge employees. Two judges from a smaller three-judge 9th Circuit panel ruled last year that California’s ban on magazines holding more than 10 bullets violated the constitutional right to bear arms. But according to the 9th Circuit Court’s 7-4 decision on Tuesday, the high-capacity ban doesn’t outlaw any weapons “but only limits the size of the magazine that may be used with firearms.” The majority of judges determined that “the record demonstrates that the limitation interferes only minimally with the core right of self-defense, as there is no evidence that anyone ever has been unable to defend his or her home and family due to the lack of a large-capacity magazine; and … that the limitation saves lives....

The letter said the significant amount of regulations and taxes imposed on the industry forces it to have prices that are much higher than what can be purchased illegally. The marketplace to buy marijuana illegally generates two to three times the amount of sales that the legal industry can, according to the letter. “The opportunity to create a robust legal market has been squandered as a result of excessive taxation,” the letter said....

There are only two questions on the recall ballot. The first asks voters if they want Newsom removed from office and the second asks which of the recall candidates they would pick to replace him. Voter confusion is in part due to the infrequency of recall elections in California. While there have been 179 attempted recalls of state officials in California since the state adopted its recall process in 1911, only 11 have qualified for a ballot, and only six of those have been successful in removing the targeted official from office....

In October, Newsom’s Office announced that California would be the first state in the U.S. to require school students to be vaccinated following the full FDA approval of the COVID-19 vaccine for grades 7 to 12 and K-6. California also was the first state to implement school mask and staff vaccination mandates. Earlier this month, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled more than a dozen proposals as part of his $100 billion California Comeback Plan. The plan is Newsom’s final budget proposal and came amid a Republican-led effort to have him recalled from office. “California’s economic recovery will leave nobody behind, that’s why we’re implementing the nation’s largest state tax rebate and small business relief programs in history, on top of unprecedented investments we’re making to address California’s most persistent challenges,” Newsom said on May 14....
