As in so many cases, both sides have a piece of the truth. To be sure, despite the many well-documented problems, California still has an impressive economy that will shape the country’s and the world’s economic future—through the entertainment, space, critical software and social media industries and international trade. A spirit of experimentation and innovation persists across the state and fuels this industriousness. Sadly, along with new technical and cultural innovations, the everyday reality outside the glamor zone presents a prospect as cautionary as it is aspirational, a harbinger of innovation marred by massive social inequality....

Michael Scott Glazebrook of Seaside has been charged with the first-degree murder of Sonia Carmen Herok-Stone, Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni said Monday. Glazebrook, 65, was arrested by members of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office around 8 p.m. Saturday. He is in custody at the Monterey County Jail, with bail set at $1 million. Glazebrook was arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty. His next court appearance is set for September 1....

Across California, indoor operations at restaurants, bars and breweries, wineries and tasting rooms, movie theaters, family entertainment centers, zoos and museums, and cardrooms, were ordered to close, effective immediately. Bars, brewpubs, breweries, and pubs must close unless they are offering sit-down, outdoor dine-in meals, and alcohol can only be purchased with a meal. In the worst affected counties, further closures include fitness centers, places of worship, indoor protests, offices for non-critical infrastructure sectors, personal care services, hair salons and barbershops, and malls....

According to the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB), those who file their taxes after April 23 could wait up to three times longer than others to receive their stimulus funds. The FTB advises: “In order to receive the Golden State Stimulus payment, you must first file your eligible 2020 tax return and wait for that return to complete processing.” California’s stimulus payments are being issued via direct deposit or as paper checks....

The court determined that corrections officials that have drafted regulations that “exclude from nonviolent offender early parole consideration any inmate who ‘is currently serving a term of incarceration for a ‘violent felony’” were correct in doing so. The case that the court ruled on stemmed from an attempt to expand on an initiative approved by voters in 2016 that allowed for inmates to apply for early parole in an effort to reduce the prison population....

The woman, who has not been named, is said to have jumped on the mountain lion in the backyard of her Simi Valley home after spotting it eating her 10-year-old miniature schnauzer Pumbaa around 2 a.m. on Thursday morning. She was unable to save her beloved dog and called the police while the lion was still in her backyard. When officers arrived at the scene, they saw the mountain lion eating the dog in the backyard before it quickly took off into the surrounding hills....
