As a 45-year-old who just left his job, I read George Soros’s assessment of the world economy with concern (“The Crisis of Global Capitalism,” The World Economy, Feb. 1). Soros predicts that Thailand and South Korea will linger in depression and Malaysia will fail as a result of shutting itself off. He calls for radical changes in the economies “at the center.” Soros himself has an impeccable record of unashamedly profiting from making self-fulfilling prophecies....

Earlier this week, Lott requested a delay in the Judiciary Committee vote, suggesting he was either gearing up to defend the nomination or preparing to let it die quietly in committee. His strategy became clear at the end of the week, when White House counsel Al Gonzales started phoning committee Democrats asking how they would vote on Pickering, and whether they would consider sending his nomination to the Senate floor even if it failed in committee....

KTLA reporter Gene Kang was discussing how the area of Hoover and 84th streets has seen an increase of motor vehicle collisions since the beginning of the pandemic when the crash occurred. Kang was at the intersection to report on a crash that killed a 42-year-old who was crossing the street with his family on the evening of February 26. “You see Hoover Street here, officials say it’s one of the most dangerous streets in all of Los Angeles,” he says, before a sedan can be seen crashing into another car....

Carman Deck, who was sentenced for killing James and Zelma Long in 1996, is expected to be put to death on May 3 at the prison in Bonne Terre, Missouri, site of all of the state’s executions. Deck’s lawyer, Elizabeth Unger Carlyle, said there are plans to appeal. She told Newsweek on Tuesday that a group representing Deck plans to meet on Wednesday, but nothing specific has been set....

George is the bigger get for the Thunder for obvious reasons. A four-time All-Star in the prime of his career, George has a reputation as being one of the best two-way players currently in the NBA. He’s an excellent outside shooter who doesn’t necessarily need the ball in his hands to be effective on offense, which should help him fit in alongside the ball dominant Russell Westbrook. It makes George the ideal Durant replacement for the Thunder because of his scoring versatility and ability to function as a secondary ball handler when needed....
