According to a report an NBC Bay Area, the incident allegedly left one man shot at least once. He was taken to hospital, where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The shooting involved Velasquez, KNTV reported, citing sources with direct knowledge of the investigation. Another man was also arrested. Police have now confirmed that Velasquez is being charged with attempted murder. “Units are currently at the scene of a shooting near the intersection of Monterey Hwy and Bailey Ave,” a statement on the San Jose Police’s official Twitter account read....

Bill AB-2932 Workweek: hours and overtime seeks to amend Section 510 of the California Labor Code by formally changing the workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours, where any time spent working after that limit is compensated at a rate no lower than one-and-a-half times the regular rate of pay. Proposed by Democratic assembly members Cristina Garcia and Evan Low, the bill hopes to improve the work-life balance of millions of people in California....

This is the first year that the Golden State Warriors will host the California Classic as it took place in Sacramento for its first three years. But California’s proposal stands apart because it would also pay women who were coerced by the state to get sterilized while incarcerated, some as recently as 2010. San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel R. Wohlfeil granted Pacers Showgirls International and Cheetahs Gentlemen’s Club injunction on November 6 after they sued San Diego County in October. He ruled adult live entertainment was “constitutionally protected speech” under the first amendment and stated the harm to the two businesses would be greater than the harm done to the government. However, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra reportedly issued a cease and desist letter to the two clubs on December 11 stating the strip clubs violated the state’s stay-at-home policy....

The state GOP called out Governor Gavin Newsom after nine district attorneys and a federal prosecutor in California alleged massive unemployment fraud in jails and prisons throughout the state. “Millions of law-abiding Californians STILL haven’t received unemployment benefits, but @GavinNewsom’s administration puts death-row inmates on their top priority list. Wow,” the California GOP tweeted. The fraud was committed in a number of ways, according to the district attorneys. Some claims were submitted by inmates directly, while others were done by family or friends....

Matthew Piercy, who is accused of wire fraud, mail fraud, money laundering and witness tampering, attempted to evade capture by hiding beneath the surface of the water in Shasta County, with the help of a Yamaha submarine. A helicopter spotted the suspect enter the lake with the underwater device, after he abandoned his truck at the shore of the water. According to a Yamaha instructional video, this make of sea scooter can propel the user to 100 feet below the water’s surface, and is designed for recreational divers....

Calls for Newsom’s removal gained traction from September 2020 following growing frustration over the governor’s actions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in April, Newsom said: “I am not going to take this fight lying down,” at a fundraising appeal sent by the governor following the announcement of the valid signatures for the ballot. “There is too much at stake, and I intend to win.” When Is the California Recall Election?...

A victory for Newsom in the September 14 election may also be seen as a win for the governor’s efforts to mandate vaccination against COVID-19 in the state, which will now require vaccines for healthcare workers. All healthcare workers in the state will have to be vaccinated by September 30 and there is no opt-out for those who receive weekly testing. California also became the first state in the nation to require state employees to show proof of vaccination or get tested at least once a week....

The state’s seven-day average of deaths reached 148 on December 10, surpassing the 146 peak level reported on December 9 and the previous record of 142 set on August 6, according to data compiled by Worldometer. The average death toll has been rising sharply since mid-November after declining from early August. Earlier in the outbreak, the average death count rose from late March to late April, before flattening out until early July and rising again through early August, according to Worldometer....

California on Tuesday led all other U.S. states in terms of statewide COVID-19 infections. New case and death numbers were expected to increase in the weeks ahead, with experts at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation predicting California could report a total of 54,000 virus-related deaths by early April. State health officials on Monday reported 1,585,044 COVID-19 cases and 21,046 virus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic. The state’s seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases was 32,523 by Tuesday, Newsom said during a Tuesday news conference....

California officials say children will no longer have to wear masks in classrooms after March 11. New guidelines also say people who are unvaccinated would no longer need to wear masks in most indoor settings starting Tuesday although it is strongly recommended, the Los Angeles Times reported. The shift in guidelines could allow millions of K-12 students to not wear masks in the classroom for the first time in months....

According to a report by Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN), Robert Rundo, one of the founders of a US far-right organization called Rise Above Movement (RAM), entered the eastern European country on February 11. Rundo and others are accused of physically assaulting people who were protesting against then-U.S. President Donald Trump in California in 2017. RAM is a white supremacist group based in Southern California, whose members believe they are fighting against a modern world corrupted by “destructive social influences” of liberals, Jews, Muslims and non-white immigrants, according to anti-hate organization ADL....

The 2020 wildfire season in California has caused insurmountable damage with more than 6,400 fires burning more than 2.2 million acres of land as of September 20, according to CalFire. That damage has also affected the state’s northern wine country, where many producers had barely begun harvesting grapes when the worst of the fires began to emerge in August. And some winemakers are already beginning to taste the effects of the fire, smoke and ash that covered much of the land in wine samples....

The Jones family, who have lived in their Discovery Bay neighborhood for more than a decade, told local media that they did not previously have any problems with white neighbors. But that changed when a white neighbor confronted them on Monday, in an incident that was captured on video. Local station KGO-TV (ABC7 News) first reported the altercation. “You know what?
