Owens took to Twitter on Wednesday to share a post highlighting an NPR report about the CDC’s plans. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky called gun violence a “serious public health threat” in an interview with CNN on Wednesday, saying it was “pedal to the metal time” on the issue. Owens tweeted: “The CDC needs to be shut down. There is no other way to say it.” The agency has been unable to conduct research into gun violence for years in large part because the gun lobby convinced members of Congress to cut funding for it in 1997....

Gore is betting that Americans will embrace the status quo, while Bush thinks he can sell his brand of change. The contrasts emerge clearly through the candidates’ respective budget plans. There will, of course, be other issues: schools, gun control, the Supreme Court. But a president’s influence on these is modest. No president can easily improve education, which depends mainly on parents, teachers and local school boards. We can regulate guns more or less, but violence (which is what people want to stop) is harder to control....

It’s more common than you’d think in mammals too. Many rodent mothers may eat some of their young if they’re sick, dead, or too numerous to feed. Michael Joseph Foy of Michigan was arrested and faces five federal charges, including assaulting a Metropolitan Police Officer who was dragged into a mob of rioters. Days after the riot, the FBI received a tip on Twitter in the form of a single image of a man carrying a hockey stick outside one of the Capitol doors. Upon further investigation, the FBI was able to identify Foy as the individual who was seen in videos “aggressively” swinging a hockey stick at the officer on the ground....

His attorney, Samuel H. Shamansky, listed names of witnesses to be subpoenaed, including Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, Lin Wood and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, according to a court memo. Xana Kernodle, 20, was found stabbed to death in a rental house in Moscow, Idaho, along with her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, 20, and roommates Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Madison Mogen, 21, on November 13. Bryan Kohberger, who was working towards a doctorate in criminology at nearby Washington State University at the time, was arrested in connection with the killings at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania on December 30. He was extradited to Idaho, where he is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary....

The Argentine striker, along with pilot David Ibbotson, went missing when their plane crashed over the English Channel in January, days after his move to the Premier League club from Nantes was announced. Sala’s body later was recovered from the wreckage, but Ibbotson has not been found but is presumed dead. A report from the AAIB released Wednesday said Ibbotson was “likely” to have been exposed to carbon monoxide before the crash, while toxicology tests on Sala showed clear signs of exposure to the poisonous gas....

The Cardinals edge rusher announced his retirement on Dec. 27 on Twitter and Instagram, saying that he’s played in his last-ever home game. “Koa’s first ever NFL game. My last ever NFL home game.
