Snake catcher Gianni Hodgson visited the school in Victoria state on Tuesday after receiving a call about the venomous stowaway. When he arrived, Hodgson carefully removed the snake from the bag and stored it away for transportation to another location. In a Facebook post, which showed the enormous reptile, Hodgson said: “This red bellied black snake was found in a student’s backpack at a school in Stawell this afternoon....

At the same time, Taiwan has sent about 200 marines to its military outpost on the Pratas Islands, according to Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post. The Pratas Islands are controlled by Taiwan. However, China also claims the islands as part of its territory, and calls them the Dongsha Islands....

But that has changed. Through its actions and the rhetoric of its Secretary-General Xi, China has shown it is no longer willing to accept this status quo. Likewise, the free world needs to rethink its approach. During Secretary-General Xi’s term as leader, Beijing has ramped up the hybrid attacks on Taiwan. It targets Taiwan’s democracy with disinformation. It throws its diplomatic weight around the world stage to coerce multilateral bodies and institutions to leave Taiwan out in the cold....

China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said in a statement on Saturday that poultry in the Shuangqing District of Shaoyang City, in the Hunan province of southern China, had fallen ill. Hunan borders Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak of the coronavirus known as 2019-nCoV. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) website, H5N1 “causes a highly infectious, severe respiratory disease in birds.” China’s Animal Epidemic Prevention and Control Center alerted the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to an avian flu outbreak on Saturday, according to the statement....

This is the dark side of China’s booming economy. The world’s most populous nation is undergoing a high-speed industrial revolution, transforming the country in record time. But this economic engine needs energy to keep it going. And in China, that almost always means coal. China produces and consumes nearly 1 billion tons of it every year, accounting for a quarter of the world’s supply. Coal fuels the factories that have sprouted along China’s coastline, heats the houses being built across its countryside and feeds the power plants churning out electricity for its expanding cities....

That was the underlying message of a 48-page report by the office of the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, issued on Aug. 31, after an unsuccessful campaign by Beijing to prevent its publication.
