So far, the tactic has worked: which is to say that it’s prevented ordinary Chinese and most democracy advocates in China from questioning Beijing’s behavior or taking up the Tibetans’ cause....

But there are no plans to “repurpose” the never-used $853,000 execution chamber at California’s San Quentin State Prison, according to Vicky Waters, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The plans for the prison’s death row section are the latest development in California’s execution narrative. Though California has not abolished executions and is one of 28 states that maintain execution chambers, the state has not carried out an execution since 2006, the Associated Press reported....

“#WillowFire in Rancho San Diego [update] Fire is still actively burning, but is generally holding at 15 acres,” Cal Fire tweeted. On Monday, the California State Senate unanimously passed SB-513, a bill presented by Senate Majority Leader Emeritus Bob Hertzberg, a Democrat. Under this bill, homeless support services will receive new funding to allow them to better help those grappling with homelessness. “California needs every tool at our disposal to get people off the street and into safe shelter,” Hertzberg wrote in a statement following his bill’s passage. “For many unhoused individuals, the path to safe shelter starts with their pets....

So much better, says this would-be Colonel Sanders, that he plans to open 72 franchises in the next two years. That might be a stretch, but Herrera has definitely found a niche. Autopsies have been a dying art in the United States; only 5 to 10 percent of corpses are dissected and examined, down from nearly 50 percent in the 1900s....
