Ian Benjamin Rogers, 45, of Napa and Jarrod Copeland, 37, of Vallejo allegedly began plotting an attack after the 2020 presidential election in hopes of starting a movement to overthrow the government, the U.S. attorney’s office for the Northern District of California said. The men were allegedly planning to use explosive devices in attacks on targets related to the Democratic Party. The DOJ also said they reportedly tried to receive support from a known anti-government militia group....

The shooting happened near Alice Chalmers Playground on the 600 block of Brunswick Avenue in the south side of San Francisco. Officers from San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) were called to the scene shortly before 4:40 p.m. They found four men suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics took all four victims to a local hospital, where two later died. City Supervisor Ahsha Safai tweeted updates about the incident. He wrote: “There was a multiple shooting today on Brunswick near Alice Chalmers Playground - This is a horrible act of violence - it took place near the park but not in the park, 4 shooting victims, one of them was grazed one deceased....

City and state beaches in Huntington Beach will be reopened after water quality tests found no detectable levels of oil associated toxins in the ocean water, but officials are urging visitors to avoid areas that smell of oil and to avoid touching materials covered in oil that wash ashore. The reopening planned for Monday was announced in a statement released by the city of Huntington Beach and California State Parks, eight days after an undersea pipeline leaked crude oil into ocean waters off the coast of Southern California....

Public health officials announced on Monday that the state’s five designated regions would exit their stay-at-home orders now that four-week projections for hospital availability have risen above Newsom’s 15 percent threshold. The easing of restrictions means all counties would go back to the color-coded four-tier system California had previously used, which assigned risk levels based on local coronavirus case rates and test positivity. The majority of California’s 58 counties are in the strictest tier (purple)....

The Merced Fire Department is using their aircraft rescue firefighting rig to pull residents stuck in an apartment complex to safety, according to a local reporter. This is only the second time the department has used this tool during flooding. The City of Merced issued an evacuation order for some areas Tuesday due to flooding risk from the overflowing Bear Creek. The city joined Merced County in declaring a local emergency to mobilize emergency crews together, city employee Jennifer Flachman told KGPE-TV....

All Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools are closed Friday, including around 220 campuses of the San Fernando Valley schools, Community Elementary, Roscomare Road Elementary, Topanga Elementary Charter, Valley View Elementary, Wonderland Avenue Elementary and Elementary Day School, according to CBS Los Angeles. On Friday morning, firefighters battled more than nine blazes across California, including the Maria Fire and the Getty Fire. Winds drove both of the southern California fires to spread and caused officials to issue mandatory evacuation orders for residents whose properties and lives could be at risk. As Santa Ana winds peaked in the southern California area Wednesday and Thursday, officials urged residents to heed evacuation orders and remain vigilant....

Saturday Night Live star Davidson, 28, had been scheduled to take the flight with Jeff Bezos’ company on March 23, which would have put him in the company of previous celebrity space tourists William Shatner and Michael Strahan. However, it was announced on Blue Origin’s verified Twitter account on Thursday that a rescheduling of the flight date to later in the month has meant that Davidson can no longer be one of the six crew members....

Smith-Fields, a 23-year-old Black woman, was found dead on December 12 at her home following a date with a white man whom she had met on the dating app Bumble. Officials with the Bridgeport Police Department in Connecticut were called to Smith-Fields’ home by the man she met on Bumble, and officials determined that she was deceased when they arrived on scene. The renewed interest in the case has come shortly after Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim announced that he was placing the officer handling the Smith-Fields case on administrative leave “for lack of sensitivity to the public and failure to follow police policy in the handling of” the case....

The queen died on Thursday at age 96, Buckingham Palace confirmed. The crown jewels include a collection of some of the world’s most rare and expensive gemstones. Two of the jewels people are calling for to be returned are the Koh-i-noor diamond from India and the Great Star of Africa, estimated to be worth about $400 million each. Their acquisition is steeped in controversy given the history of British colonialism....

Russell Wilson threw the third interception of his night with just over a minute left in overtime, allowing the Cardinals to set up the winning field goal, which Zane Gonzalez duly converted to give Arizona a 37-34 win. It was an unusually wayward performance from Wilson, who had last thrown multiple interceptions in a regular season game in Week 1 of the 2018 season and had been intercepted more than twice in the same game only three times in nine seasons....

Newton’s start to the season was put in doubt last week, when he suffered a foot sprain early in the team’s preseason game against the Patriots.
