Some 5.7 million Californians are eligible for the payments, including people receiving California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), along with those who currently qualify under multiple existing federal assistance programs. The $600 payments are part of the state’s $7.6 billion COVID-19 relief package, which includes $2.1 billion in grants and fee waivers for small businesses. While some residents have already begun receiving the $600 direct payments starting on April 15, others might have to wait up to six weeks or longer....

Nearly 1.4 million Latino voters have already voted ahead of Tuesday’s recall vote, according to Los Angeles-based Spanish language news outlet La Opinión. In Los Angeles County, almost two-thirds (63 percent) of the mailed ballots came from registered Democrats while 15 percent were from Republicans. The margin was much narrower when it came to those casting their ballots in person—40 percent were cast by Democrats, while 37 percent were cast by Republicans, the newspaper reported....

An investigation was launched earlier this week after an image featuring a group of eight young people posing with swastikas painted on their bodies appeared in a popular social media post. Wheatland Union High School District officials later admitted that the image featured students from Wheatland Union High School, which is located in Northern California’s Yuba County. “I can confirm that the students in the picture are Wheatland Union High School students,” Wheatland Union High School District Superintendent Nicole Newman said in a Thursday letter to stakeholders obtained by Newsweek....

According to the local police, a group of people were gathered at the home in the area of Cedar and Clarkson for a party when the shooter opened fire against attendants at around 5:30 p.m. Authorities have not yet released information around how many people were shot and what their conditions are, as they wait to inform family members. We know that victims, whose ages according to officers range between 20s and 50s, were taken to a nearby hospital....

The San Juan Unified School District said it was looking into the incident, which took place at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento last week. The teacher, who has not been named, had several flags from Germany on display in the class, including the Nazi swastika. The school district has not specified which subject was being taught. The investigation is looking into why the teacher thought the flags “were appropriate to use” and ensuring that both the instructor and others understand it is “not an acceptable way to teach any curriculum,” the school district added....

This past August, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) voted to ban gas-powered cars by 2035. The measure requires all new cars and light trucks sold in the state to not emit carbon and other greenhouse gases, in an effort to lower the state’s carbon emissions. Proposition 30, which was on the ballot Tuesday, proposed a 1.75 percent tax on residents earning more than $2 million annually. Funds from the tax would have been largely used to subsidize electric vehicle purchases and charging stations for lower-income residents....

The Sandalwood Fire in Calimesa was 100 percent contained late on Monday night, according to a post shared on Cal Fire’s Facebook. The flames destroyed 1,011 acres of land before it was stopped. However, as authorities managed to fight off the Sandalwood Fire, two more fires sparked in Riverside County. In the town of Oasis, the Johnson Fire erupted after vegetation caught fire on Monday, affecting about 30 acres of land while just a few miles away in Thermal, the Martinez Fire, caused by debris, covered roughly 20 acres of land....

Newsom said on Twitter Monday the requirement will expire on February 15, following other governors who have also announced a similar easing of COVID-19 protocols that have been part of daily life for nearly two years. As the highly contagious Omicron variant began surging in December, Newsom and other governors reinstated masking requirements and other measures intended to slow the virus’ spread. But Newsom said Thursday that California’s case rate has decreased by 65 percent since its peak from the Omicron wave....

On Friday, a Saudi-led airstrike against a prison in Saada, Yemen—run by the country’s Houthi rebels—killed and wounded over 100 detainees, NPR reported. Save the Children said over 60 people were killed, adding that the prison mostly held detained migrants.
